Two brief comments on your PLN for CS226
1. I hope you will allow people to use other formalisms than first-order
logic if they want to try them! After all, if PC is so good the comparison
of different formalisms will be to its advantage.
2. The description of the philosophical literature in McCarthy+Hayes (which
you mention at the end of the PLN) is totally inadequate as it deals
only with the formal semantics/modal logic school of philosophy, whereas
for the "Planner" approach I think the work of the linguistic (ie
ordinary-language) philosophers is far more relevant.
I am willing to help people do 1, and will try to make a reading list
for 2.
Bruce.

(To John McCarthy; info for Craig)
John,
We have been having a lot of interaction internally and with BBN
about ho to proceed; most of the interaction has been working
out answers or positions on issus which have been around for a while
and which are more likely to be settled by some studied thinking on the
part of few instead of group interaction. Craig Fields is
joining ou office and has been spending some time on this subject,
and the result is heading toward a much better organized structure
than would have been likely to emerge otherwise.
It now appears that we won't call the meeting until the latter part of
Fb, or later. It is likely to be at ARPA, and we will probably send
out a fairly specific memo with a statement of the issues we see and
ask for some preparation on the part of the attendees. Something
should emerge from our office by the end of Jan. It is also likely
that we will spend some time at the P.I. meting discussing either
Tenex in particular or serviceable systems in general.
Sorry for the delay.
Steve

YOU ARE ONE OF SEVERAL PI'S WHO WANT TO SWITCH TO TENEX AND (A)
CAN'T SEEM TO GET WHAT THEY WANT FROM BBN (NO BLAME INTENDED) AND
(B) ARE WILLING TO COORDINATE IF IT ISN'T TOO PAINFUL. SUPPOSEDLY
A TENEX MEETING IS TO BE HELD AT ARPA IN THE VERY NEAR FUTURE
TO BE FOLLOWED BY A TENEX COMMITTEE. FOR MY INFORMATION I AM
INVESTIGATING THE TENEX PROBLEM, BUT STEVE CROCKER HAS OPERATIONAL
RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE TENEX PROBLEM AS I AM NOT OFFICIALLY
AT ARPA UNTIL MARCH. I CANNOT BE HELPFUL UNTIL THEN! I AM VERY
WORRIED ABOUT THE MANY FLAVORS OF TENEX, DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BBN
AND DEC PAGING HARDWARE, DIFFICULTY OF TENEX COORDINATION WITHIN
THE ARPA COMMUNITY, ETC. IF YOU FEEL THAT YOU MUST TAKE
IMMEDIATE ACTION (BEFORE THE TENEX MEETING THIS MONTH OR NEXT
AT THE LATEST) COORDINATE WITH STEVE CROCKER SO THAT THINGS DON'T
ACCIDENTLY GET WORSE. PLEASE ALSO KEEP ME INFORMED. I HOPE TO VISIT
YOU IN FEBRUARY TO INFORMALLY FIND OUT ABOUT YOUR ACTIVITIES.
IS TERRY WINOGRAD THERE??

I reorganized a bit and added some more, including Luckham's stuff (cleaned
up slightly). There is nothing there on Speech Recognition. Did you request
any from ALS or NJM? If not, they can probably be induced..
You may note that I added Cerf's blurb on a separate page. I never found
Feigenbaum.
I put the latest version back in REPORT[1,KNM].

John and Ed,
I ran across some puzzling and contradictory mumblings about the
state of Russian software. Can you tell me what state it's in,
whether it's any good or not, how does it compare with ours, etc.?
My impression was that their mathematics is excellent, so that they
sometimes get very good mileage out of low-powered hardware,
particularly in economic modeling and guidance controls (space shots),
but that otherwise their system organization was way behind.
also, who else is current on the subject? This is not a big deal,
so no special rush -- jst got curious.
Thanks,
Steve

enormously from your views. It called CRIME.NOT[DOC,AJT].a.

To all:
I have begun to consider whether it is desirable to put ARPA money
into Edinburgh and have had one talk with Michie. At the moment, I am
purely in an information-gathering phase and have not developed
any firm plan or opinion. I would be very interested in your views.
Below are some questions to help structure the dialog. If they
aren't the right questions, suggest others. Also, feel free to bring
in other people to the discussion.
1. Is it a good idea to support A.I. in Edinburgh? Why? (Is there
anything else in Edinburgh besdies A.I. which is worth discussing?)
2. What work is best there and how good is it, say by comparison with
American work?
3. What is the interaction between the political structure there and
the work? (And what the hell is the political structure??) Should
support be for Michie's group or some other?
4. What kind of cooperation would make sense between a project in
Edinburgh and U.S. projects?
Thanks,
Steve

I would be really grateful if you would send off the reference today
or tomorrow so that it will arrive in time to be considered. I should
have bugged you before but I didn't know they had written to you.
